A driving theory test advert that claimed a charge of £31 but levied nearly £50 has been banned. It follows a move to block adverts from websites that charge for the traveller EHIC card, which is free from the NHS.

Two adverts offering to book the driving theory test at a higher cost than the official rate have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.

Book Theory Test Online was censured for claiming on a Google advert: “Theory test £31 – Instant Booking £31 BOOK NOW. Book Official Dsa Theory Test Now”.
The real test, a requirement for all holders of provisional licence holders before they take the driving test for their full licence, costs £31, but the company charges £49.50.
The ASA received 22 complaints, saying the advert was misleading on price and because it gave the impression the website was an official government website or a Driving Standards Agency theory test provider.
The ASA was concerned by the company’s “lack of response” and apparent disregard for its code. It banned the advert. Identical claims made on a second ad that linked to were also banned.
